LSGS MAKES WAVES ON LAG B'OMER

Cheering, Dancing, Laughing… as the Golden Flame cruised along the River Thames, the girls of Lubavitch Senior School in London were entertained and amused by a fantastic series of games and challenges, and of course extremely lively dancing!

After joining the Lubavitch of London annual Lag B’Omer Parade, the girls had exclusive access to the boat, the Golden Flame - even the name hints to Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, and a fabulous programme which kicked off with girls being quizzed on their knowledge of Lag B’Omer to entitle them to dessert!

The rest of the day was filled with laughter and excitement as Year 11 dressed up with creative and realistic imitation of their teachers. The most daring girls in the school faced challenges including peeling and eating a banana without using their hands, having their teeth brushed by a classmate and the bravest of all were faced with a fish eyeball!

The atmosphere was extremely Achdusdik and inspiring, and here’s what the pupils had to say:

'Insanely Fun! It was the best school programme EVER!'

'Amazing atmosphere!'

'Such a unique and amazing programme with loads of Chayus and Achdus!'

'It couldn’t have been better! Let’s do it again!'

'The best part was the teachers, they were such good sports! Thank you!'

'Year 11 dressing up was really superb!'

'A huge surprise, I didn’t think it would be that good!'

'The best Lag B’omer of my life!'

'WOW! It was unreal! Everyone was included and it was simply out of this world!'

LONDON GIRLS GET COOKING

The girls at Lubavitch Senior Girls' School in London are excited to get cooking, after a successful fundraiser helped set up a new school kitchen.

At the end of the last school year, the school's kitchen, sewing room, science lab and french room, underwent major renovations, with all the old equipment thrown out and brand new facilities were installed. These changes were extremely costly, and there were not enough funds to complete some of the final touches.

A group of enthusiastic parents decided to organize an Indoor Car Boot Sale with all proceeds going to the school.

Headed by Mrs. Judy Weisz, parents donated clothes, toys and household goods for the project. The sale took place last Sunday at the Croft Court Hotel, courtesy of Mrs. Shternie Ohana, and raised a total of £1,000 for the school.

Thanks to these efforts, the kitchen has now been equipped with two high-speed food processors and a fridge, and the girls just can't wait to get cooking!

If any past pupils would like to get involved or help support the school, contact us at admin@lubavitchseniorgirls.com

GIRLS SHINE IN PERFORMANCE DRAMA

The girls of Year 12 successfully organised a School Play at the end of term, enjoyed by the pupils, parents and friends.

Mistaken was performed on December 21st and 22nd 2011, showcasing the girls' talents in Drama, Song and Dance. The full audience journeyed back in time, to life in the village of Lubavitch in Czarist Russia, accompanying Chaim Zelig the Innkeeper in his challenges.

As all the songs, drama and dances are created by the pupils, as well as all the props and costumes designed by our creative pupils, the School Play gives girls a sense of responsibility, enhances the unity of the pupils and provides a creative outlet.

SENIOR GIRLS SCHOOL TO RECEIVE STATE AID

The Lubavitch's Senior Girls School, located in the Borough of Hackney has been officially recognised as a Voluntary Aided School (VAS). It has sufficiently met the criteria required by the Local Educational Authority (LEA) in order to be recognised as a VAS.

With almost 120 children enrolled, the school has consistently achieved exemplary results and sits in the top quartile of schools in the Borough. The new status will mean that the LEA will cover a major part of the school's running costs. This will free up resources, enabling Chabad Lubavitch to put more funding into the schools and other Educational, Social Welfare and Outreach projects for the wider Jewish community.

The School joins as a confederate with Lubavitch Girls Primary School with became recognised for State Aid in 2004.

Rabbi Shmuel Lew, school principal said “this is a tribute to our dedicated and competent staff, so capably led by Mrs Helen Freeman and Mrs Golda Junik; and our precious pupils whom Ofsted rated as “Outstanding” in their moral and spiritual values.”

The school's new status is in large part thanks to the tireless work of Headteacher of the Girls Primary School Mrs Freda Sudak, and Senior School Headteacher Mrs Helen Freeman.

Mrs Freeman, who received her education in Hackney, first at Sir Thomas Abney then at Skinners, said “After receiving my education in Hackney myself, I am thrilled at the opportunity to give back to the borough”

The Lubavitch Junior Boys School, also located in the Borough of Hackney is currently going through the same process and hopes to attain the same status in 2012.

GIRLS' SCHOOL TOPS LEAGUES

England's Lubavitch Senior Girls School is the best performing school in the London Borough of Hackney.

GCSE league tables released this week revealed that Lubavitch Senior Girls School (LSGS) is the best performing school in the London Borough of Hackney and the only secondary school in the borough where 100% of pupils achieved 5 A*-C grade passes in their GCSEs.

Official figures showed that more than 30,000 London teenagers failed to achieve the minimum of five C-grades including English and Maths; with an estimated 19 state comprehensives failing to provide an acceptable standard of education.

However, this is not the case for Lubavitch senior Girls School who have gone from strength to strength over the past few years.

Rabbi Shmuel Lew, headmaster of Lubavitch Senior Girls School said: "These results reflect the incredible dedication of Head Teacher Mrs Freeman and our staff, and our pupils' focus. Our pupils are a credit to the values which LSGS instils in them."

Rabbi Bentzi Sudak, chief executive of Chabad Lubavitch UK said: "This is a huge achievement for everyone involved at the school. The quality of teaching is second to none and this achievement is a testament to the teachers and staff who have helped Lubavitch Senior Girls School reach such a milestone. Not only has the calibre of education improved over the past few years but so has the expectation."

Mrs Helen Freeman, headmistress of Lubavitch Senior Girls School also commented on the schools achievement by saying:

"We are delighted with these results, which are the result of a combination of confident, empowered pupils and dedicated highly skilled staff. You have to bear in mind the girls also cover a full Jewish studies curriculum. I think this actually helps them get down to work when it comes to the national exams."

The girls in Lubavitch Senior Girls School have been working tremendously hard in preparation for Kof Bais Shevat, the Yohrzeit of Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka. The time of her Yohrzeit (coinciding with the mid-term break for the school) is also the global Kinus HaSheluchos, with women and girls converging on Crown Heights from every corner of the earth. Three girls won the Goral to go to New York: NG of Year 10; BK of Year 9, and SM of Year 9. It is going to be a very special time!

SUMMER 2008 EXAM RESULTS

The girls of the Lubavitch Senior Girls School again achieved exceptional results in the GCSE exams taken at the end of Years 10 and 11, and the GCE Advanced and Advanced Supplementary Level, taken at the end of Year 11 and the one year Sixth Form. 12 pupils in year 11 sat an average of 7 GCSEs, and 9 pupils in year 10 took 2 or 3 subjects. A girl in Year 10, who commutes for 2 and a half hours daily, attained 3 A*s. 10 pupils leaving Year 11 achieved 5 or more A*-C passes at GCSE. Two of them achieved straight A*s and As.

At GCSE level there were 62% A* and As. Shaina Charkova, from Riga, Latvia, who joined our school in Year 9, attained 7 passes (A-C) at GCSE including an A*, an A, and a B in English.

At A and AS level, 14 girls from years 11 and 12 took between them 21 exams in Maths, Biblical Hebrew and Religious Studies. 15 of the exams were AS level, and 6 were A2. 100% passed, and 85% achieved A or B.

Rabbi Shmuel Lew, Headmaster, pointed out that Lubavitch Senior Girls School accepts pupils from the whole spectrum of academic ability, and also encourages weaker pupils to enter for the exams, giving everyone the opportunity to achieve their best. These results are well above the National Average. He praised the superb team, led by Mrs Helen Freeman, Headmistress and Mrs Golda Junik, Head of Kodesh, for bringing out the best qualities of each pupil.

Secular studies occupy only 50% of the school day at Lubavitch Senior Girls School. The pupils also study Chumash, Nach, Shulchan Aruch, Chassidic teachings and other Kodesh subjects to a high standard, training them for future leadership positions in Jewish life and the Jewish community.

EXCELLENT RESULTS ALL ROUND: SUMMER 2007

Including Ester and Roizy, nearly a third of the 2007 outgoing Year 11 class of Lubavitch Senior Girls School have certificates for six or more GCSE subjects in which they gained A* or A. Over 80% of the class have at least five subjects with grades from A* to C, all including Maths and English. They have thus received a good standard of general education during their years at Lubavitch Senior Girls School, in addition to a very high level of Kodesh study: Chumash with commentaries, Jewish Law, Chassidic Philosophy and other subjects.

This level of attainment for pupils in a non selective school puts the Lubavitch Senior Girls School among the top thirty five state non selective schools, according to the national GCSE results published by the Independent.

The Year 11 girls took GCSE exams in English, French, Maths, Science, History, Modern Hebrew, Child Development, Religious Studies, adding to the Biblical Hebrew they had previously gained in Year 10.

93.3% of all the marks gained this year, including English and Maths, were grades of A*to C, far above the National Average which was 63.3%. More than 60% of the marks were A/A*, for which the National Average was 19.5%.

In Science, 50% of the Lubavitch candidates achieved A or A*, and over 56% achieved A or A* in Maths. These figures are well above the National Average which is, for Science 15.8% A or A* and for Maths 13.8% (for girls, boys tend to achieve lower grades in all subjects).

Most of the girls stay on for the one year Sixth Form, where they complete their A levels. This year’s group took Maths, English and Biblical Hebrew at A level and Religious Studies at AS level.

There was 100% pass rate and over 70% of the final grades were A or B.

After the Sixth Form the Lubavitch students proceed to Seminaries in Israel and elsewhere in order to follow advanced courses in Jewish knowledge. This trains them for their future roles as Rebbetzins, teachers, outreach directors and, in general, highly informed members of the Jewish community, dedicated to advance its future.
