NEW MENORAH DESIGN BRIEF

Since 2007 Trafalgar Square has been home to an iconic menorah every year for the Jewish festival of Chanukah, lighting up the night with electrifying entertainment followed by the age-old tradition of lighting the Menorah.

This year we are looking to refresh the look of the Menorah taking it to the next level to create an impact not only for the 5000+ who attend the main event every year, but also to the hundreds of thousands of people who pass by Trafalgar Square over the Chanukah festival. We also aim to showcase the new design through publicity across the UK and around the world.

The competition will be a one-time event open for submissions from practitioners in the fields of art and design with technical designs being submitted by the 30th June 2019.  Designs must be compliant with GLA requirements for weight (the weight restriction is vehicle/infrastructure up to 10 tonnes) and will be submitted to a judging panel selected by Chabad Lubavitch UK and the Genesis Philanthropy Group.  The chosen design will be announced in early September 2019.

Once a design is submitted, Chabad Lubavitch UK will own the construction and publicity rights relating to the Menorah.

MEASUREMENTS

1.       The height of the design will not exceed 9754mm (20 Amot).

2.       The width of the design will not exceed 4877mm.

FUNCTIONALITY

1.       The design cannot exceed 9754mm [AA1] in height.

2.       There is an existing base for the Menorah which we would like to use (see photo attached). The base is 4m wide and weighs 10 000kg. The design should incorporate use of this base, which can be altered or modified.

3.       The design needs to  allow for easy assembly and disassembly.

4.       The design needs to  to fit the storage requirements. [MO2]  [LS3]

5.       The lights of the Menorah must be electrically operated, each one independently.  The design will need to incorporate cabling to enable the lights to be turned on remotely.

6.       The design should be angle-focused rather than curved [AA4]  [LS5] . (see Appendix 1)

7.       The menorah must have 9 lights. Eight of which must be level and in-line with each other. The ninth should be differentiated in height and/or placement. [AA6]  (see Appendix 2)

MATERIALS

1.       We are lucky enough to have a manufacturing partner of XXXX, entries should direct their designs to take advantage of this opportunity.

FORMAT

1.       The design must be submitted electronically on a maximum of three pages in JPEG or PDF format and should showcase either the front or be 3D.

2.       The design should be able to be adapted to computerised manufacture.

TIMELINE

1.       All designs must be submitted in the above-mentioned format by 30th June 2019 by 12pm.

2.       The chosen design will be announced in September 2019 [AA7] .

 [AA1]Repeat commend9754 re metric units

[MO2]I think we need to be more specific here. Should we not just include the restrictions for a standard articulated lorry? ‘all parts of the Menorah should be transportable on a single articulated lorry with a lorry trailer measuring 16.5 m in length, 2.55m in width. (Also, the maximum weight for UK road transport is 44 tonnes (43.3 long tons; 48.5 short tons) so this should be factored in, if the GLA weight restriction is higher).

[LS3]GLA is 10 tonnes (inserted above)

[AA4]This needs to be re-written to explain the reference to Rambam and also give context to the discussion, perhaps the original Rambam drawing could be a front cover for the brief?

[LS5](BS) concerned not to prejudice the the design by  including Rambams actual drawing (including the triangles etc. should we leave it as “angular rather than curved” and include an appendix with the drawing drawing and explanation (this article:Chabad.org/ 3523185)

[AA6]Would be great to include resource material explaining the centrality of the menorah to our understanding of the temple and it’s use as part of Chanukah, remember this is going out to an audience that may have only the barest understanding of what this is all about.

[AA7]If the intension is to enable replication and on-going sale of the design/ merchandising, it is important to get some legal advice as to how the ownership of the design should be described to the winning entrant… this should happen right form the outset.
