English Chabad Houses Help UK Flood Victims

pWEk1490516.jpgAs the floodwaters that have submerged low-lying areas of England recede, Rabbi Eli Brackman, co-director of the Oxford Chabad Society, and his wife Freida have been reaching out to students and the university's surrounding community to help them get their lives back to normal.

In the past several days, the United Kingdom has witnessed historic flooding, with the Thames and Severn rivers overflowing their banks. Two were found dead in a rugby club in Tewkesbury yesterday; more than half of dozen towns along England's waterways had neighborhoods underwater.   Continue...

Leeds Now Home to UK's Fifth Campus Chabad House

uoaD1377192.jpgWhen the University of Leeds' Jewish students return to classes this fall, they'll have more than one occasion to celebrate. The first: The arrival of Rabbi Michoel and Chana Sorah Danow to the northern England university will mark the opening of the third campus Chabad House in the United Kingdom this year. The second, flowing naturally from the first, will be the Danow's oldest son's bar mitzvah.

"One week after the start of the term in September we plan on having a Soup in the Sukkah event," reports Chana Sorah Danow, who moved to Leeds with her husband and brood of eight from Sweden before the summer. "But in December, we'll be making a bar mitzvah, so that Shabbat will be very special with the students."   Continue...

Prince Edward Inaugurates Chabad-Lubavitch's Drugsline

wkOx1427530.jpgPrince Edward, the Earl of Wessex and youngest son of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, inaugurated the latest satellite of the drug crisis prevention and counseling center known as Drugsline. The Gants Hill offices will also house Drugsline’s School’s Outreach Team.

Drugsline, brainchild of Rabbi Aryeh Sufrin, is a project of Chabad-Lubavitch of Ilford. The group provides services for those struggling with drug addiction, and offers free, impartial support and information to concerned family and friends. Since its foundation in 1991, Drugsline has reached many thousands of people and has expanded its services to include education, counseling and support.   Continue...
