Chanukah in Trafalgar Square - Join the Celebrations!

Menorah.jpgThis Chanukah 5773, Trafalgar Square will once again be home to Chabad Lubavitch's giant 30ft Menorah.

The project was made possible thanks to the ongoing partnership between Chabad Lubavitch UK, Jewish Leadership Council (JLC), London Jewish Forum (LJF), and the Community Security Trust (CST).

The Menorah will be located in the North-West area of Trafalgar Square. It will remain in place for the whole of Chanukah (Saturday 8th December - Sunday 16th December).

On Monday 10th December from 5pm there is a free communal event taking place; everyone is welcome at 'Chanukah in the Square'.
This special celebration is for all the family and will involve a lighting ceremony with Mayor of London, Boris Johnson as well as live music performances, doughnuts, and for the first time in the UK....Dreidelman!

State Aid Celebration at the Lubavitch Boys' Primary School

Lunch - School.jpgLast weekend over 50 people gathered for a reception at the Lubavitch Boys' Primary School to celebrate the school achieving Voluntary Aided status earlier this year.

For the last couple of years Chabad Lubavitch has worked closely with the Local Education Authority (LEA) in order to make the necessary improvements to the school so as to qualify to receive State Aid. 

The work was made possible due to a handful of generous individuals who both contributed and raised awareness of the project thus helping Chabad Lubavitch reach their target.

ThLunch Bentzi.jpge reception was attended by various dignitaries, donors, employees and other supporters. Rabbi Bentzi Sudak welcomed people to the event and spoke about the immense positive effect of this both for the school and the entire organisation.

A plaque was then unveiled inside the school dedicating part of the school as the 'Ben Ish Chai Wing'. Rabbi Shmuel Karasik, Headmaster of the Boys' Primary School talked about the running of the school and how it offers students unrivaled education opportunities with a strong focus on Torah studies.

Rabbi Odom Bradman shared his experience as a graduate of the school and as a parent of a pupil. Many alumni of the school have taken up positions as Chabad Shluchim both in the UK and all over the world. Rabbi Yitzchok Sufrin, from Lubavitch HQ then spoke about the connection between the Ben Ish Chai and the Lubavitche Rebbe Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson. The ceremony concluded with a presentation to the people who helped the school reach this new milestone.

The Lubavitch Boys' Primary School, received state funding from the beginning of July 2012 following the Senior Girls' School which received its funding in June 2012 and the Ruth Lunzer Lubavitch Girls' Primary School which has benefitted from state funding for a number of years.
 

 


 

29th Annual Shluchim Conference takes place in New York

Kinusall.jpgOver 4000 rabbinical scholars, Jewish community leaders, educators and counsellors from around the world gathered together last Sunday night for the gala banquet of the 29th annual International Conference of Chabad-Lubavitch Emissaries.

This year's themes included the 200th anniversary of the Alte Rebbe's passing and the 70th anniversary of the publication of the Rebbe's book Hayom Yom.

Due to a last minute switch because of relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy, the conference took place at the New York Hilton Hotel in Manhattan. Aside from this change, the programme and conference went ahead largely as planned.

JoiningKinuslau.jpg tens of thousands more who watched the proceedings online, the crowd of emissaries and their lay leaders, representing thousands of locations in communities large and small, gave Chief Rabbi Yisroel Meir Lau a standing ovation as he ascended the stage to address the audience. Chief Rabbi Lau delivered a powerful and inspirationkinus eli.jpgal talk, sharing moments of his longtime and special relationship with the Rebbe from his decades-long service in the Israeli Rabbinate.

Other speakers included Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, Vice-Chairman of Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch who chaired the Kinus, Rabbi Eli Rosenfeld from Chabad of Lisbon, and Rabbi Ari Shishler from Chabad of Strathavon, South Africa who spoke about the themes of this year's Kinus.

The banquet concluded a weekend of educational workshops, programmes and lectures which were aimed at developing different approaches and igniting discussions and comparisons between emissaries and the communities that they represent.

Kinus2.jpgAfter the proceedings the traditional post-Banquet Farbrengen took place with Shluchim singing and dancing late into the night.
