Thursday, 21 June, 2012 - 1:58 pm

CHABAD odom.jpgThe Chabad Centre of Buckhurst Hill, directed by Rabbi Odom & Henny Brandman held their first large scale fundraising event at The Prince Regent Hotel in Chigwell on Thursday. Attended by over 220 people from across the wider community the purpose of the evening was to raise £70,000 for the kitting out of a new Synagogue and Community Centre building that Chabad will be moving into in Buckhurst Hill. The target was reached and a fantastic evening was had by all.

The evening was extremely successful CHABAD dinner.jpgwith everybody commenting on the amazing and electrifying atmosphere in the room. The evening was run by toastmaster Robert Persell who is himself a member of the Buckhurst Hill Chabad community who helped plan a packed and engaging schedule for the evening.

The welcome was made by Rabbi Odom Brandman, who painted a picture for all those gathered of the history of Chabad Buckhurst Hill and how in just 7 yearsCHABAD food.jpg it had grown from running out of a small front living room to now be bursting at the seams of the hall they currently rent.

Rabbi Brandman, originally from the area, set up the Chabad Centre in Buckhurst Hill 7 years ago with his Chicago born wife Henny before they had any children and as a young couple having spent their first year of married life living in New York. The Brandmans now have 4 boys and are endeared by the local community whom they have dedicated their lives to.

Henny said, “In Chabad, a community position is for life, we have moved here and are dedicating ourselves to the wellbeing of thCHABAD food.jpgis community, ready to do whatever needs to be do. The dinner was a tremendous display of what a dedicated group of individuals can pull off as most of the arrangements from the catering to the toast mastering and flowers, were done voluntarily by members of the community”.

Guest speaker of the evening was Stephanie Davies from Laughology and there was also a public auction of a special dress and Sabrage.

The new building on Queens Road in the centre of Buckhurst Hill will be completed later in the summer and the current fundraising drive is to cover the cCHABAD-0056.jpgosts of putting in a kitchen, partitions, Ark, Bima and other Shul furniture.
