This year’s Design Competition is being launched to identify the design for a new Menorah that, with the support of the Major of London, will illuminate Trafalgar Square for years to come. The aim is to create an even greater impact for the thousands of people who attend the main Chanukah in the Square event every year, as well as the hundreds of thousands of people who pass by Trafalgar Square over the Chanukah festival.
Chanukah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights, ” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods. The Hebrew word Chanukah means “dedication, ” and is thus named because it celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple. Chanukah begins on the eve of Kislev 25 and continues for eight days.
